Elizabeth Fairlie Ramsay is Tobermory’s Severn class lifeboat, the biggest in the UK and designed to be able to operate in the worst of seas – as the Tobemory lifeboat has done in an epic 11 hour shout to a fishing boat in serious trouble off the Isle of Coll. This was almost a year ago, in January 2013.

Dr Sam Jones, Press Officer for the Tobermory Lifeboat and a member of the volunteer crew, has let us know that a new RNLI fundraising steering group has now been set up in Tobermory to raise money to help the lifeboat save lives at sea.

The members of the Steering Group are looking for volunteers to join the initiative.

The small group of volunteers will take responsibility for organising Tobermory’s annual Lifeboat Day in August but also plan to hold fundraising events throughout the year and, in conjunction with the highly successful Ross of Mull RNLI Branch, around the island.

Steering Group Secretary, Caroline MacInnes, says: ‘The lifeboat is at the heart of the community, not only in Tobermory but also across Mull.

‘Raising funds or attending an event in aid of the RNLI is a very real way to help our local volunteer crew to save lives at sea. We’re looking for volunteers to join us. Even if you can only spare an hour here or there, we’d love to hear from you.’

If you are unable to volunteer to join the fundraising group, you can still help raise funds for the RNLI through a little retail therapy – by shopping with Amazon. If you follow the link to the online retailer through the RNLI website the charity will receive 5% of any purchases you make.

As one of their first tasks, the fundraising group is keen to refresh all the collection boxes on the north of Mull.

They are asking for all RNLI collection boxes are returned to the lifeboat station in January. If anyone is unable to deliver their box to Tobermory, please call the station on 01688 302143 or e-mail tobermory@rnli.org to arrange collection.  New collection boxes will be re-issued by the end of January.

The fundraising group is also keen to hear from any new outlet in the north of Mull which is interested in helping this good cause and displaying a collection box.

Anyone who would like to get involved with the new fundraising group should contact Steering Group Secretary, Caroline MacInnes:
